The Pakatan Harapan government is putting the lives of the people at risk due to its incompetency in quickly tackling the Pasir Gudang air pollution incident, says Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong.
The MCA president told Pakatan leaders to stop toying with public health and safety and be serious in handling the incident.
“Please be serious when facing a crisis, not wasting time playing politics and competing against each other in the government.
“The lives and public health cannot be taken for granted,” he said in a Facebook post yesterday.
“But hours later Zuraida came forward to deny her own statement.
“What’s the story? Now all the schools in Pasir Gudang are ordered closed. There are thousands of students there,” he said.
MCA deputy president Datuk Dr Mah Hang Soon questioned if Pakatan regards the pollution issue in Pasir Gudang as “unimportant” as their the slow action reflected their lackadaisical attitude.
He said the first sign of pollution-related symptoms was reported on June 20, but the authorities had only recently ordered the schools closed.
“On Sunday, 20 students from SMK Nusa Damai started suffering from breathing difficulty and vomiting. Yet local authorities remained in the dark over the source of the air pollution.
“It took the Johor government three days to arrive at the decision to close the schools,” he said.
Dr Mah said the fresh incident indicated that the area was still polluted with hazardous waste.
Pasir Gudang MCA chief Tan Tuan Peng said the authorities were clueless because they had apparently never learnt from the Sungai Kim Kim incident.
“Where is the SOP (standard operating procedure)?” he said, adding that schools could have taken proactive measures to protect students and staff if they had an SOP to follow.
